Residents remove unruly neighbours
Neighbours of Gogo Rose Mbatha (80) grew tired of people making an unbearable noise in Gogo Mbatha’s yard.
The Umthambeka community came together to help a gogo get rid of disruptive tenants on June 29.
On July 1 the community also cleaned the gogo’s yard.
Neighbours of Gogo Rose Mbatha (80) grew tired of people making an unbearable noise in Gogo Mbatha’s yard.
The secretary of the sector 4 crime forum, Mr Mphikeleleli Selepe, said the rowdy characters were unknown to the community.
He said some were friends to Gogo Mbatha’s tenants and some were customers to a beer trader who operated from Gogo Mbatha’s yard.
“They made noise the whole night. Sometimes there are fights among themselves and neighours found it hard to sleep,” said Mr Selepe.
He said the community decided it is enough and went to evict the disruptive tenants.
“I am happy that the community intervened in getting rid of these people. It was beyond me. I couldn’t report them to the police and I couldn’t chase them away. Each time I tried they told me this is not my house. I feared for my life,” said the gogo’s daughter, Ms Ester Tobela.
Unhappy neighbours also said the house had become a hideout for criminals.
“There was no control in that yard and we always complained,” said Mrs Florence Zwane, a neighbour.
“We request a continuous monitoring of the house because we don’t know what is going to happen going forward,” said Mrs Twala.
“The substructure forum has been delegated to monitor the situation at the house. The community appointed one of the family members to look out for Gogo Mbatha’s well-being as an intervention measure,” said Mr Selepe.
