All Star Shelter for boys to be converted into youth care centre

The centre will house children who are abused, abandoned, neglected and destitute

FOLLOWING the temporary shutdown of Kempton’s All Star Boys’ Shelter, Child Welfare Kempton Park will convert the premises into a children’s youth care centre.

The shelter was temporarily closed while child welfare needed to register All Star as per the requirements from the Department of Social Development, as it was not registered previously.

The centre will house children who are abused, abandoned, neglected and destitute and will be overseen by Kempton’s Child Welfare branch.

“In order to do that we require the help of the community as we are in desperate need to get this done by the end of August in order to submit a business plan for funding in September,” the branch’s acting director, Alice Tandi, said.

The state of the premises in its present condition will not acquire the necessary funding and therefore needs to be upgraded.

The society is asking for donations from the public which will help towards restoring the home and getting it fully functional again.

Its wish list includes bedding, curtains, paint, tiles for some of the bedrooms, TV, cutlery and crockery, pots, wooden bedroom cupboards and toys, both for indoors and outdoors.

For more information, people may contact  Tandi on 011-970-1814.
