Joburg mayor Clr Parks Tau said the City of Joburg (CoJ) invested more than R100-billion over a 10-year period.
“It is the city where we welcome more than 10 000 new arrivals every month and it is the city where we draw strength from our diverse cultures,” said Clr Tau.
The mayor was speaking during an end of term report on Wednesday last week.
TV host and radio personality Tim Modise was the programme director.
Among other attendees who graced the event were Members of the Mayoral Committee, members of the opposition party, including the DA mayoral candidate, Herman Mashaba, regional director of Region A Abigail Ndlovu and community representatives.
“We are determined to make Johannesburg one of the ‘greenest cities’ on the planet and reduce our carbon footprint. We generate electricity from sewage. We electrify informal settlements and traffic lights with the power of the sun,” Clr Tau told those present.
“We can look back on the past five years with a considerable sense of achievement, but this did not come without challenges though.
“Johannesburg’s economic democracy aims to help households most at risk to poverty and insecurity. The study conducted by an independent body shows that about 42 per cent of our people go to sleep without food every month. It further indicates that most people spend their earnings on transportation and food,” said Clr Tau.
The city has launched Jozi Bread to reduce food insecurity and poverty through job creation as this is in line with the City Region Growth Development Strategy.
