Petrol price drop confirmed as stations run dry

Four companies say the strike will not affect their supplies

The price of petrol will fall by 99 cents on August 1, while diesel will go down by 74 cents per litre, the energy department said in a statement late Friday afternoon.

Paraffin, at retail price, will drop by 88 cent per litre and LP gas will drop by R1.60 per kilogram.”

“The reason for the decrease is the strengthening of the rand against the dollar during the period under review, which contributed about 24 to 26 cents to this price,” the department said.

Meanwhile, at least four of the country’s major petroleum companies say the strike at refineries will not affect their fuel supplies and there are contingency plans in place should the industrial action continue indefinitely.

BP, Shell, Total and Sasol all say, for now, the strike will not affect their supplies.

Reactions to a post on Kempton Express’ Facebook page have indicated that at least two local petrol stations have already ran out of petrol or diesel.

There are also reports of stations in Pretoria and KZN that are without petrol or diesel.
