The senior citizens were overjoyed at receiving their gifts from the PCO on the birthday of their struggle icon, former President Nelson Mandela.
The Tembisa Parliamentary Constituency Office (PCO), situated at number 681 Rivonia Street in Hospital View, Tembisa, hosted a memorable Mandela Day event on July 18.
They handed over 250 blankets to senior citizens who were identified from the 12 wards of Tembisa.
The blankets were acquired from the Gauteng Department of Social Development.
The senior citizens were overjoyed at receiving their gifts from the PCO on the birthday of their struggle icon, former President Nelson Mandela.
The presentation of the blankets was conducted by members of the PCO management committee and other councillors, who were led by the Member of Parliament (MP) deployed in Tembisa, Sello Ali Tleane.
He commended the senior citizens for their gallant roles and contribution in the liberation struggle and for assisting in rebuilding the township.
“The issuing of blankets will now become an annual event to honour senior citizens for their contribution in building the economy of Gauteng during their younger years,” said Mr Tleane.
After the blankets were handed over to the happy elderly citizens and refreshments served, the excited pensioners were ferried back to their homes.
The PCO thanked the office of the MEC for Social Development and Welfare in Gauteng, Ms Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, for the provision of the blankets.
