NGO to rebuild homes

EMM establishes Tornado Command Centre to facilitate donations

In the aftermath of the recent tornado that swept through parts of Tembisa, Mr Ghaleb Cachalia, the DA mayoral candidate for Ekurhuleni, announced that he had secured a donation commitment from an NGO to spend R100 000 on the recovery effort, particularly for those in informal dwellings who lost everything in the storm.

“The NGO involved will therefore be rebuilding homes for the 40 worst affected families, working with local businesses that assemble informal dwellings from quality materials.

“The first three of these were handed over. More will be handed over as local businesses complete the assembly. I took the step of raising these funds in a non-partisan manner because, as politicians, we all have a responsibility to bring people together in a time of crisis,” said Mr Cachalia.

The City of Ekurhuleni on Monday announced that it has been inundated by good Samaritans wishing to make donations to tornado victims, which led to the establishment of a Tornado Command Centre to facilitate donations. Interested donors can donate blankets, usable household items, non-perishable food parcels and clothing items.

Ekurhuleni has also set up an EMM Disaster Relief Funds account. The account details are as follows:

Bank: Nedbank

Account Number: 1120949068

Branch Code: 198765

The address of the Tornado Command Centre is as follows:

Conner R562 and Madiba Drive,

Winnie Mandela Zone 10,

Tembisa

For any enquiries, residents and organisations wishing to make donations can contact the Ekurhuleni Emergency Centre on 011 458-0911.
