Church honours the elderly

"We want to thank them because they are our parents and we want to celebrate them for their contribution in raising the community of Tembisa."

The Reformed Methodist Community Church in Mashimong honoured elderly people in Tembisa on July 31.

The event was aimed at reaching out to elderly people who cannot go to church due to complications that affect their mobility.

“We want to thank them because they are our parents and we want to celebrate them for their contribution in raising the community of Tembisa,” said the secretary of the church, Ms Lindiwe Hlatshwayo.

Forty elders were presented with gifts and they also enjoyed a meal prepared by the congregation.

Ms Hlatshwayo said children were also treated to goodies. Mascots were brought by the Brand Club from Crown Mines to entertain the children.

“We had a beautiful sermon by Reverent Ntsizwana Luthuli and we were blessed to have a 102-year-old granny, Mrs Mosima Tefo, as our special guest,” said Ms Hlatshwayo.

The congregation was requested to invite elders they know in the community.

“This was our first elder’s day function and we hope to make it an annual event to appreciate the elders,” said Ms Hlatshwayo.

“We implore the community to come forward and pledge assistance to making future events possible.”

Ms Hlatshwayo said as a church they would like to thank the donors Mr Mphatho Huma from Beez @ Danroad promotions, Mr Piet Van Coeller and Mr Sydney Knoesen of the Brand Club, Mrs Nthabiseng and Mr Victor Matsimela from Elgin Laundry and Dry Cleaners, and other families for their contributions.
