PLEA recognises learners
"They were motivated and today they are able to attain distinctions."
Six learners were recognised for their excellent performance at Winnie Mandela Secondary School on August 2.
The learners, who performed exceptionally well in their June exams, were given certificates by PLEA, which is an educational organisation that offers extra classes for all Tembisa grade 12 learners.
“We did this as a motivation so that other learners can improve in their studies. This will also motivate teachers to work harder,” said Mr Fortune Phuti Mashala, the founder and president of PLEA.
He said the learners struggled before with their normal day classes and attending PLEA extra classes helped them in building their characters, as they mingled with learners from other schools and began to improved academically.
“They were motivated and today they are able to attain distinctions,” said Mr Mashala.
“The classes helped me a lot. Previously I would get a level 4 mark but since I joined PLEA’s extra classes I have improved a lot. I get a level 7 mark which is a good mark, but I am aiming for a hundred percent,” said Mabel Maleka (18).
The grade 12 learner said PLEA is currently helping them with two subjects and they pleaded for more subjects because there are many learners who are struggling.
Mr Fortune Mashala said he is currently running PLEA from his own pocket. He pleaded with local businesses and parents to assist.

The second year law student said the initiative will also create employment for graduates who are unable to find employment.
“The classes are conducted everyday and learners who are interested can join the classes,” he said.
