Operations in nature reserve to be discussed

The development and maintenance of new and exciting walking trails has been completed

NEW toilets, vicious attacks on eucalyptus trees by bugs and beetles, impact of human activities and control of alien and invasive vegetation are all included in the many and varied management operations taking place in the Modderfontein Reserve.

These, and other developments, will be outlined by Boaz Tsebe of the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), who manages the reserve and will be the guest speaker at the August Modderfontein Conservation Society meeting.

As manager of the reserve, he will report back on progress made in the past year. The meeting will take place in Modderfontein Town Hall on August 18 at 7.30pm.

In addition to attacking invasive alien vegetation, Boaz’s vegetation management programme includes the rehabilitation of the area. Substantial progress has been made in the all-out war on robinia, black wattle, bugweed and pompom weed, among others.

Development and maintenance of new and exciting walking trails, by members of the conservation society, has been completed; thousands of indigenous trees, shrubs and aloes have been planted in the reserve over the past months and an environmental education centre is in the process of being completed.

Tsebe will talk about these activities, outline future plans for the reserve and answer questions.
