Passenger killed as BMW rear-ends stationary vehicle at high speed
The four other occupants of the stationary car suffered moderate injuries and had to be extricated using the jaws of life
A male passenger in a broken down vehicle was killed on Wednesday afternoon when a BMW crashed into it on the N1 South in Midrand.
According to EMER-G-MED’s Max Cohen, the car the deceased was in had been stationary in the fast lane after breaking down near Samrand Road.
A BMW driving at high-speed rear-ended the vehicle, fatally injuring the man. Paramedics were called to the scene just after 1pm.
“One person from the stationary vehicle was assessed to have sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead on the scene. The four other occupants sustained moderate injuries, two requiring Advanced Life Support intervention,” Cohen said.
Paramedics stabilised them while fire and rescue personnel worked to free them from the vehicle, using the jaws of life and other rescue equipment.
A sixth person, the driver of the BMW, was fortunate to escape with only minor injuries and refused any hospitalisation.
The traffic police were on the scene to investigate accordingly.
