Sixteen traffic fine dodgers arrested at road block on the R21

The road block resulted in major traffic delays

Sixteen motorists were arrested on the spot on warrants for outstanding fines on the R21 near East Rand Mall in Boksburg on Wednesday morning.

Metro police warrant section officers, in search of traffic fines dodgers, conducted the operation on the R21 in both directions between the Griffiths Road turnoff and North Rand Road in Boksburg. The operation was conducted between 10am and 12.30pm by 24 officers.

Sixteen motorists who had failed to pay their traffic fines, as well as disrespected the courts for not contesting their fines, were detained. They decided to settle on the spot an amount owed totalling R13 200, Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, said.

Fifty other motorists, on being made aware of their outstanding traffic fines, made a sensible decision to pay immediately to avert a situation of having to contend with a warrant. They parted with a total amount of R22 000.

Over and above this, 13 fines were issued for various other offences.

Kgasago warned: “Once again, motorists are urged to regularly check their status regarding traffic fines to avoid inconvenience and a situation where they have to part with huge unbudgeted for amounts or face jail time.”
