Sebenza SAPS puts stop to brewing taxi violence on P91

The fight started in Kempton West at China Gate and ended on the P91

AFTER a week of fighting over routes between Tata (TAT) and Lethabong Taxi Association (LTA), Sebenza SAPS had to break up a fight on the P91 on Friday afternoon.

The fight between the taxi owners and drivers was sparked after LTA, which has routes in Edenvale, told TAT from Esther Park that they are not allowed to pick up passengers in their areas

“The fight started in Kempton West at China Gate when taxi owners and drivers from LTA tried to stop TAT from picking up passengers from the road. The fight moved on to Esther Park routes and ended up on the P91 with more than 50 taxis when we broke up the fight,” said Sebenza SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Sharon Tsotsotso.

The EMPD also arrived on the scene for backup. There were no injuries.

“We went back to the same place on Sunday and there was no trouble but we will be sure to keep an eye on these associations to make sure that there are no future problems. We also urge the community members who make use of taxis to make sure that you take the right taxi and be alert,” said Tsotsotso.
