Water crisis looms in Ekurhuleni as metro stays mum

The DA are pushing to have the metro communicate and put water restrictions in place

KEMPTONIANS are facing frustrating times with water supply as Rand Water has started to cut water supply to the municipality as no water restrictions are in place in the metro.

The DA has expressed its concern regarding the random water outages in Ekurhuleni. “In some parts of Ekurhuleni, residents have been without water hours on end without any prior notification or temporary measures in place to supply at least drinking water,” ward councillor Jaco Terblanche said.

Strict water restrictions are on the cards
“Residents of Kempton Park Ext 2 to Ext 4, Glen Marais, Aston Manor, Nimrod Park, Allen Grove and Rhodesfield are the worst affected thus far, with water being off since the early hours of the morning. The water levels in the reservoirs are extremely low, leading to a loss in water pressure and thus no water being supplied to residents,” Terblanche said in a statement released this afternoon.

“The DA has established that Rand Water has implemented water restrictions to reduce water usage and preserve water resources due to dam water levels dropping below threshold levels of 60%. As a result, the Department of Water and Sanitation has set the requirement for residents to reduce water usage by 15%.

“Residents, however, have not been informed by Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality regarding any water restrictions, nor the existence of a prescribed schedule to enable them to prepare accordingly. There have also not been any communication from the metro informing residents about mitigation measures to use water sparingly,” Terblanche continued.

“We have received confirmation from a reliable source in the water department that the water situation will return to normal after 5pm today. In the interim, we have organised temporary water tanks to roam around affected areas to supply much needed drinking water to residents from 2pm today until water is restored.

“The DA will be monitoring the situation and will keep residents updated.”

With a water crisis looming, the DA are pushing to have the metro communicate and put water restrictions in place considering the needs of citizens and the local economy.
