Little ones watch movie with their new spectacles

Over 500 learners were given complimentary eye exams

STER Kinekor, in conjunction with Spec Savers and Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) teamed up to fit 59 learners with spectacles at Festival Mall on August 31.

The Vision Mision initiative aimed to provide corrective eye care to disadvantaged learners free of charge.

Over 500 learners were given complimentary eye examinations at Kwanele Primary School and over 50 learners were in need of spectacles.

Each learner was given their own set of fitted spectacles and received a free popcorn combo to watch the movie Ice Age: Collision Course as well as a goody backpack with stationary.

Some of the children were so overjoyed they ran to the nearest mirror to see how they looked. “It feels very good, I can see,” said one of the learners.

“We approached ACSA to partner with us on the project. ACSA supports créches and primary schools in communities adjacent to its airports,” said CSI manager of Ster Kinekor Theatres, Geraline Engelman.

For a lot of these learners it was the first time they actually had clear eyesight and even the first time they were in a movie theatre.

“This project is something that is very helpful to the children in the long run, as with better vision they will be able to do better in school, as many children with eyesight problems go unnoticed and never get the eye care they need or simply can’t afford it. Ster Kinekor, with the help of Spec Savers and ACSA, are really making a difference,” Engelman added.

To contribute to Vision Mission make a small donation of R2.50 when booking at the self service terminals in Ster Kinekor cinema complexes nationwide or book your movie tickets online through www.sterkinekor.com.
