A 37-year-old man was found guilty on two counts of murder and received a double life in prison sentence.
Constable Patricia Mgijima said Judge Himstra of the South Gauteng High Court found Floyd Nkululeko Mgcina guilty of a double murder committed in 2013.
“He was found guilty of stabbing his 62-year-old mother and his nine-month-old daughter at a house in Emfihlweni Section.
“He stabbed his mother 16 times and his daughter four times. Mgcina also turned the knife on himself and stabbed himself in the chest, trying to commit suicide with a butcher’s knife,” said Const Mgijima.
Const Mgijima said on November 28, 2013, at about 7.30pm, the accused had an argument with his girlfriend. His mother tried to resolve the conflict.
“After a few minutes the accused entered the main house from his outside room, grabbed a knife from the kitchen drawer, took the child to his room and stabbed the child four times. He came back to the sitting room where he stabbed his mother 16 times,” said Const Mgijima.
Const Mgijima said the accused’s girlfriend and other family members managed to escape.
“The child was certified dead on the scene while the mother died on arrival at hospital,” she said.
Constable Mgijima said Mgcina appeared before Judge Himstra on September 23 and he was found guilty on both two counts of murder.
Mgcina was sentenced to life imprisonment on both counts of murder and he was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The station commander of the Tembisa SAPS, Brigadier Vuyokazi Ndebele, thanked Detective Sergeant Seopa for working tirelessly on the case until it saw the accused convicted.
The station commander further urged the community to take any domestic disputes seriously and report it to the police .
