Man uses false identity to buy bakkie worth R285 000

A case of fraud and theft of motor vehicle is being investigated by the police

POLICE are searching for a man in connection with the fraudulent purchasing of a car from a Rhodesfield dealership.

The man, believed to be in his late 50s, allegedly bought a white Toyota Hilux bakkie worth R285 000 from the dealership using a false identity. The incident occurred on September 17.

The Kempton SAPS spokesperson, Capt Jethro Mtshali, said the wanted man used someone else’s identity, a William Mahlane Bopape, to commit the fraud.

“He took Bopape’s ID and replaced Bopape’s photo with his own and kept the name as is,” Mtshali said.

“He then used a cash cheque and signed it as William Mahlane Bopape.”

The car garage then later discovered the check was fraudulent after being unable to cash it.

The registration of the bakkie is CZ 93 XC GP.
