Gang hijacks truck with R1.8-million worth of cellphones near Glen Balad Mall

Suspects in four cars ambushed the G4S Security escorted truck

A DHL truck carrying cellphones worth an estimated R1.8-million was hijacked on Monday afternoon.

According to Kempton Park SAPS spokesman, Capt Jethro Mtshali, suspects travelling in four cars ambushed the truck, which was being escorted by a G4S vehicle.

The truck was transporting the cellphones from OR Tambo International Airport to Plumbago Business and Logistics Park in Glen Marais, where a DHL supply chain is situated.

The incident happened between 12 and 12.30pm on Weinberg Street near Glen Balad Mall.

“It is believed the suspects, travelling in four cars, including a Mercedez-Benz, Polo and Hyundai, ambushed the truck. The hijackers opened fire but fortunately no one was injured. However, two vehicles close to the scene were hit by stray bullets,” Mtshali explained.

The front of the G4S vehicle was damaged and it is believed the suspects may have bumped into it.

The suspects drove the truck to a vacant house on Mulder Road, not far from where the incident occurred, where they transferred the cellphones into another truck.

Mtshali confirmed that a case of truck hijacking is being investigated.

No arrests have been made.
