A former police officer (37) has been arrested for carrying two unlicensed firearms.
According to Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton SAPS, the arrest is the result of a tip-off received by police on Monday morning.
“At about 9.30am, the Crime Prevention Unit received information about a suspicious looking person inside a silver VW Polo parked at the McDonald’s complex along Monument Road,” Mtshali confirmed.
Police officers then made their way to the scene.
“On arrival they searched the occupant and found a loaded Norinco pistol. When police searched the vehicle, they found a second firearm, a revolver and ammunition. Vehicle registration plates were also discovered in the boot of the car.”
On further investigation, it was revealed the suspect was a former cop who was stationed in Olifantsfontein and was dismissed in 2014 for corrupt activities.
“The matter is currently being investigated by the Hawks. They are trying to establish if the suspect has been involved in crimes, especially hijackings and robberies, that have been taking place in Kempton’s hot spot areas recently.”
The suspect will appear in court for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
