Illegal electricity connection results in man’s death

A 64-year old man from Mabena Informal Settlement in Ivory Park, Extension 6, died when he accidentally stepped on live electric wires that crisscrossed his shack.
The shack is one of many in the informal settlement that has been connected illegally to the grid.
It is believed the victim lived alone.
The victim’s neighbours said the man was going to take a bath on Tuesday, October 17, at about 4pm.
They became worried the following morning when he was nowhere to be seen.
They went into his shack, which was slightly open, and that was when they found him on the floor.
Paramedics were called to the scene and he was certified dead.
The station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, called on members of the public to refrain from illegally connecting their shacks to the grid as it can be dangerous.
“This incident shows that fiddling with electricity and electrical cables is a dangerous thing for one to do,” said Brig Ngcobo.
