The station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brigadier David Mbongiseni Ngcobo and his staff, are concerned about the spate of violent crime this is becoming the norm in the open space of Clayville’s Extension 45.
Brig Ngcobo is further concerned that the police’s numerous appeals for people to avoid the area, especially when it is dark, seem to be falling on deaf ears as people continue to visit the notorious place during those hours.
“People get robbed while praying and others are robbed while in compromising positions. And sometimes there is death.”
On Saturday night, a 34-year-old man was fatally shot while he and his girlfriend were sitting in his vehicle at the spot.
“Both the deceased and the woman were first robbed by two men, one of whom was armed. Apart from the above incident, which resulted in the loss of life, another person was also shot and injured. The man was also in the company of a woman. The suspect shot the couple without a warning. Couples tend to like that spot to get intimate, something that results in robberies, injuries and even deaths,” said Brig Ngcobo.
“We have had people being robbed while praying, hence the reason we use our meetings with community structures to make them aware of this place and what happens to those who visit the place after dark. As the police we will try our utmost to patrol the place but, in the same breath, individuals are strongly urged to avoid that spot, especially at night,” said Brig Ngcobo.
