Man gets three years for trying to bribe cops with R100

He tried to bribe two officers with R100 after he was arrested for not having a driver's licence

THREE years behind bars or a R10 000 fine.

This was the sentence of John Moyo (31), a Zimbabwean national, who was arrested after he attempted to bribe two Kempton Park police officials on October 3.

During a crime prevention operation headed by station commander, Brig Bertha Kgoroba, the accused was spotted by a police officer parked on Margaret Avenue in in the CBD.

A Toyota Fortuner, with Moyo in the driver’s seat, was parked in the middle of the road.

“When asked why he was parked in the middle of the street, he told the officer he had just dropped off his employees,” Kempton police spokesperson, Capt Jethro Mtshali, said.

The police officer then requested his driver’s licence, which the accused failed to produce.

“When told he was under arrest for driving without a valid licence, the accused offered the senior officer a R100 note for his release, which the officer refused as that amounted to bribery and corruption,” Mtshali explained.

The accused was taken into custody at the police station, where he again tried to bribe another police officer with R100 to release him. That policeman also refused.

Moyo was charged with bribery and was sentenced on October 21. The case was investigated by D/Sgt Welcome Shabalala.

“This is the message that the police force is sending out to the public: to never even try to bribe the police in Kempton Park, as they will be brought to book,” Mtshali concluded.
