Video: Metro police crack down on Kempton Park hot spots

As Kempton's nightlife came alive, police began their crackdown on the crime-ridden town

A brothel operating as a sports bar has been shut down after it was raided by metro police on Friday night.

The brothel, on the corner of Pretoria and Voortrekker roads, was one of three entertainment spots in the Kempton CBD that was closed down.

Acting on complaints received from the Kempton community and as part of Ekurhuleni mayor, Mzwandile Masina’s 100 Days Programme, metro police together with the police took action against crime in the area and raided the streets of Kempton Park.

Residents have in the last few years complained about the deterioration of the CBD as drugs, prostitution and other crimes have taken over the town.

As Kempton’s nightlife came alive, police also began their crackdown on crime-ridden areas.

Starting at 10pm, the EMPD’s specialised units left no stone unturned in the CBD area, including Pretoria Road, West Street, Voortrekker Road, Central Avenue, Kempton and Jubilee roads.

“Law enforcement checked for crime such as drug trafficking, non-complying operating taverns and driving under the influence of alcohol. A stop-and-search was also conducted, where pedestrians and vehicles were searched for dangerous weapons and illegal firearms,” Kobeli Mokheseng, media officer for the EMPD, commented.

The brothel, masquerading as a sports bar, was closed down after metro police discovered prostitutes in the back rooms of the pub. Two taverns on West Street, which were operating without proper documents, were also closed down.

“Three other taverns were searched on Pretoria and Central roads but nothing sinister was found.”

One male driver on West Street was apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The speed unit issued 32 traffic fines to motorists who were driving over the speed limit along Atlas and Besembos roads.

On Saturday morning between 6am and 11am, 22 suspects were arrested in the CBD area in another special operation.

According to EMPD spokesperson, Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago, the first phase of the operation began on CR Swart Drive where three motorists were arrested for drinking and driving and 122 fines were issued for documentation and minor defects.

“In the second phase law enforcers cordoned off several streets to enable thorough searching of persons and properties. Seventeen undocumented persons were arrested, one suspect nabbed for theft out of a vehicle and one for possession of 800g of dagga,” Kgasago said.

Three vehicles found to be unroadworthy were discontinued.
