Applications now open for SAPS reservists

It is important for candidate reservists to understand that their services will be voluntary, without any remuneration

HAVE you ever wanted to serve the South African Police Service as a volunteer? Well now is your chance.

The South African Police Service invites people who are energetic, intelligent, physically and mentally fit – and have a desire to serve their country on a voluntary basis as reservists, to assist the police in the fight against crime.

Police departments throughout the country are recruiting reservists for the force in the 2016/2017 financial year.

The process for Norkem police will consist of five phases:

• Phase 1: Paperwork Submission – November 1 to December 31, 2016

• Phase 2: Fitness and Vetting – January 21 and 22, 2017

• Phase 3: Psychometric Assessment – February, 2017

• Phase 4: Informal Stations Training – March, 2017

• Phase 5: Formal Provincial Training – April, 2017

Phase 1 is the submission of the required paperwork prior to formal applications. This phase will run from the November 1 to December 31.

“Interested applicants are requested to submit the thirteen documents required, along with a cover letter and hand written motivation – in English – to the Norkem Park Police Station,” Capt Seth Baise, Reservist Commander at Norkem Park, explained.

Completed sets of documents are to be handed to F/Sgt Kunene at Norkem Park SAPS, between 9am and 3pm daily.

“Please also note that the number of reservists who are to be recruited, will be limited based on the need, capacity and resources that the police station has available.”

Kempton Park SAPS said people who are interested in applying, can visit the police station and ask for room G13; where they can ask for W/O Orca Killian or Maryna Wheeler.

Sebenza SAPS applicants should also get application forms at the police station.

Kempton and Norkem stations each have 32 posts available; and Sebenza has 16.

Applicants must be living in their respective police station’s demarcated sectors. For Kempton, this includes people living in the CBD, Rhodesfield, Glen Marais, Isando, Spartan, Pomona, Bonaero Park, Serengeti, Aston Manor, Allen Grove, Nimrod Park and Kempton Park ext 1-4.

For Norkem SAPS, applicants must live in the following areas: Birchleigh, Edleen, Van Riebeeck Park, Norkem Park, Birchleigh North, Greenfield and School of Rail, Terenure, Kempton Park West eastern side, plus Chloorkop industrial on the eastern side; Birch Acres old and extensions.

For Sebenza, applicants must live in Kempton Park West behind China Gate Mall, Chloorkop on the China Gate Mall side, Esther Park, Cresslawn, Croydon and Modderfontein.

Selected candidates will be invited to attend the Reservist Training Programme and successful candidates may be requested by the National Commissioner, to perform duties in order to strengthen and support the police in performing their constitutional mandate as set out in the Constitution.

Reservists will be expected to perform a minimum of 16 hours voluntary duty per month, during which they would be expected to perform general functional policing duties in sectors at station level.

The duties include: preventing, combating and investigating crime, maintaining public order, protecting and securing members of the community and their property; as well as upholding and enforcing the law.

The SAPS stressed that reservists would be offering their services on a voluntary basis, without any remuneration and that their positions as reservists, don’t guarantee appointment as permanent members of the SAPS.

Documents to be submitted include:

1. Residency: You need to be a South African citizen by birth; include a copy of your ID book/ID card.

2. Age: Applicants must be at least 20 and below 50 years of age; of which documentary proof must be furnished.

3. Employment: Applicants must be employed and provide proof of employment, via a letter from their employer or a recent salary statement.

4. Proof of residence: Applicants must provide proof of residential address in the form of an Ekurhuleni metro account.

5. Qualification: Applicants must be in possession of senior certificate (Grade 12) or NQF level 4 qualifications. Include a copy of matric certificate or NQF Level 4 Statement of Results from SETA.

6. Medical: Complete a health questionnaire, at your own cost, which is confirmed by a registered medical practitioner.

7. Character: Be of good and sound character; provide a character letter from a senior community member.

8. Language proficiency: Be able to speak, read and write at least two official languages, of which one must be English. Applicants to submit a letter confirming language proficiency.

9. Retirement: Understand that his or her services may be terminated at the age of 60. Applicants to submit a letter, acknowledging this retirement age of reservists.

10. Tattoos: No tattoos which will be visible if the person wears a uniform. Applicants to submit a letter from applicant confirming no visible tattoos.

11. Acknowledgement: Applicants must understand that their services will be voluntary, without any remuneration and that their positions as reservists, don’t guarantee appointment as permanent members of the SAPS. Reservists are to have the ability to work a minimum of 16 hours per month. Applicants to submit a letter acknowledging reservists are volunteers without remuneration – and their ability to work the minimum hours and attend court as required.

12. Criminal record: No criminal record or any criminal or departmental cases pending against him or her. Applicants to submit a letter confirming no criminal record and departmental records exist.

13. Exclusions: Applicants to submit a letter of acknowledgement and confirmation of exclusion.

 

A person may not be appointed under the following circumstances:

1. Does not have a fixed residential address, or is not in full-time employment

2. Is a member of the Regular Force of the National Defence Force; holds a position in the Department of Labour or a political party; is involved in tenders to the State; is a journalist/scholar/bouncer/Municipal policeman/sheriff or deputy sheriff; works in private security or investigation services/at a brothel or escort agency/the taxi/trade of liquor/running a scrapyard/microlending/second-hand goods/tow-in or breakdown/gambling/firearm licences/insurance investigations/serving of court processes/trading in livestock or funeral undertaker industries.
