Max update: No prosecution likely after alleged animal cruelty
The animal was removed by the SPCA and taken to a vet for treatment
The man allegedly responsible for dragging a seven-month-old puppy next to a car will most likely not be prosecuted for animal cruelty.
Jan du Toit, manager of Kempton Park SPCA, said on Monday that the society tried to open a case with the police but they were not helpful at all.
According to Du Toit, the SPCA was called to a scene in Birchleigh on Tuesday afternoon last week where it was believed a pure-bred seven-month-old bull terrier puppy, called Max, was dragged next to a car by its owner. It had since been established it was not the owner.
According to Du Toit, Max was allegedly dragged by his collar alongside the vehicle.

The animal was removed by the SPCA and taken to a vet for treatment. The dog’s back paws and rear were seriously injured.
Du Toit said, according to the vet, Max suffered deep abrasions. Its back paws were raw, with the nails chafed into the bloody growth point.
“We cannot refuse to return the dog to its rightful owner. The owner visited Max daily and he will be returned to his home once healthy enough to do so.
“The owner was at work at the time of the incident. The man allegedly responsible had returned to Durban after the incident,” Du Toit said.
The society asks residents who spot animal cruelty or abuse to take videos or photographs if at all possible to strengthen the SPCA’s case.
