Another blackout leaves Birchleigh North residents fuming
Residents were relieved when electricity was restored on Monday evening, the latest outage has intensified frustrations in the community.
Residents of Birchleigh North are expressing growing frustration following prolonged and repeated electricity outages that have severely disrupted daily life in the area.
According to Ward 91 Clr Desmond McKenzie, residents were left without electricity from May 24, with power only restored at approximately 19:00 on May 25.
However, parts of Birchleigh North experienced another outage again this morning (May 26), prompting renewed calls for accountability and urgent intervention from the City of Ekurhuleni.
“The ongoing outages have had a major impact on households, businesses, elderly residents and individuals working from home,” said McKenzie.
“Residents have raised serious concerns regarding the lack of communication, recurring infrastructure failures and the prolonged delays in resolving the matter permanently.”

McKenzie said while residents were relieved when electricity was restored on Monday evening, the latest outage has intensified frustrations in the community.
“Many residents are now demanding a detailed explanation from the relevant department regarding the cause of the repeated failures, what interventions are being implemented, and how the City of Ekurhuleni plans to prevent similar incidents in future,” he added.
The councillor said residents deserve reliable service delivery, transparent communication and urgent intervention to stabilise the electricity supply in Birchleigh North.
McKenzie confirmed that he has requested feedback from the relevant department and will continue engaging with officials until residents receive the answers and service delivery they deserve.
