A Birch Acres man was assaulted with a gun while being hijacked by three armed men.
According to Const Patricia Mgijima of Tembisa SAPS, the 24-year-old man was attacked in the driveway of his home on January 18.
“It’s alleged that the victim had stopped in front of the gate of the house at the corner of Rietsanger and Piet-My-Vrou streets. He was speaking on his cellphone when he noticed three men moving in his direction,” Mgijima said.

One of them pointed a firearm at him and ordered him to get out of his car. He was then assaulted with the firearm butt before the suspects got away with his BMW 1 Series.
“Police urge members of the community to not sit in their cars outside their yards, as they become easy targets for hijackers and robbers. Motorists should rather get inside their premises or where they are visiting, rather than being outside on the streets.”
In a separate incident the day before, a shootout ensued between hijackers and an off-duty policeman during an armed hijacking in Birchleigh North.
It’s alleged that a 44-year-old man was dropping off his children at a home on Lorna Street at about 7.30pm when he was approached by two gunmen, who demanded his car.
“An off-duty policeman, who was inside the house, noticed the commotion and used his private firearm to fire several shots towards the armed men. The armed men retaliated, firing two shots back and made off in the victim’s charcoal VW Polo.”
Fortunately, no one was injured during the shooting.
The Polo was later recovered in Sethokga Section in Tembisa.
