The Ivory Park SAPS is calling on people who have a habit of parking their vehicles on the street in the evenings and late at night to stop doing so.
This is because an increasing number of people are falling victim to crimes.
On Sunday night an Ebony Park, a man and his girlfriend were seated in a car when they were hijacked by a gang of four men.
The Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Captain Bernard Matimulane said, “One of the gang members later raped the woman as two of his accomplices forcefully took the man to an ATM for him to withdraw money. The suspects’ luck ran out at the ATM in Tswelopele after the man fought back.
“He attempted to grab one of the suspects, and screamed in the process. This rattled the hijackers who fled the scene on foot. Thanks to an off duty police officer, one of the suspects was arrested and the cellular phone and vehicle keys belonging to the victim were found in his possession,” said Capt Matimulane.
He said the 30-year old suspect was expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court to face a charge of hijacking.
“The search for the three other suspects is underway. The police are conducting a thorough background check of the suspect to see if he may have been involved in other criminal activities elsewhere,” said Capt Matimulane.
