Residents foil hijacking

The Station Commander of the Ivory Park, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, has thanked the Ebony Park community, who, when a victim of hijacking screamed, came out in numbers and arrested three men for hijacking that had just happened.

The station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, has thanked the Ebony Park community for apprehending three suspects following a hijacking.

According to the Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Captain Bernard Matimulane, on Monday night a Kaalfontein man was seated in his vehicle in Ebony Park when he was confronted by the three men, two of whom were armed.

“The victim’s vehicle was taken but not without a fight. Two others fled the scene in the victim’s car. The victim screamed during his scuffle with one of the robbers and this alerted the nearby residents who came out in numbers.

“The community blocked the road, which, unbeknown to the two suspects, was a crescent. The two men drove right into the blocked road and the community caught them,” said Capt Matimulane.

Capt Matimulane said the SAPS was called to the scene and all three suspects, aged between 28 and 30, were arrested. They are currently detained at the Ivory Park Police Station, pending their appearance in court.

“All the suspects are from Tembisa. The firearm used to threaten the victim was a toy gun,” said Capt Matimulane.

Brigadier Ngcobo said, “We have said time and again that, faced with a united community, these criminals can be dealt with easily, without the need for any person to resort to mob justice.”
