Hijackers wound security guards on Griffiths Road

The patients were stabilised before being transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment

TWO security guards were wounded in a shootout with alleged truck hijackers on Griffiths Road, just off the R21, on Wednesday morning.

The suspects apparently hijacked a truck loaded with cellphones when the shootout occurred around 11am.

According to Boksburg North SAPS spokesman, Capt Juanita Coetzer, the suspects followed the truck on the N12 to the R21.

“They fired shots at the vehicle escorting the truck, wounding the two security guards,” said Coetzer.

Two suspects drove off with the truck, taking the truck driver with them. A tracking company and the EMPD K9 Unit gave chase and managed to stop the truck on Solomon Street in Witfield.

“The truck had only half its load of cellphones. They arrested two suspects and found the truck driver. ”

Boksburg North SAPS members and the metro police then pursued the suspects’ truck and managed to apprehend another suspect, with a jamming device, on Lower Boksburg Road.

This truck was carrying the rest of the hijacked cellphones.

Max Cohen of Emer-G-Med said they responded to the scene on Griffiths Road.

“On arrival paramedics found a large police presence after an alleged truck hijacking. A shootout ensued and left two security officers with moderate to serious gunshot wounds, both requiring advanced life support intervention.

“The patients were stabilised before being transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.”
