The Ivory Park SAPS arrested a 37-year-old suspect who allegedly duped a woman with the promise of a non-existent job. He later stole two cellular phones from the victim before disappearing.
According to the Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Captain Bernard Matimulane, the unsuspecting victim was looking for a job in the Midrand area when the suspect approached her.
“After some introductory remarks, the suspect allegedly told the victim that his employer, who is apparently based in President’s Park, Midrand, was looking for someone to help. It turned out that the suspect overheard the victim speaking to someone earlier before he made his move,” said Capt Matimulane.
Capt Matimulane said as things turned out there was no job and the suspect himself was not employed.
“A few days after the robbery, the victim and members of the community managed to trace one of the phones. They lured the suspect into a meeting her and caught him when he least expected it. He was caught in Ivory Park, Extension 3, and was detained at the Ivory Park SAPS,” said Capt Matimulane.
The 37-year-old suspect was taken to the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, February 8, on charges of theft under false pretences.
The Ivory Park SAPS is calling on anyone who also had items stolen through a similar method to contact the police station.
