RESIDENTS using Bergrivier Road in Terenure can expect heavy delays in the next five months as phase 2 of the road upgrade is set to begin.
Construction on Bergrivier Road is due to start on February 20
Ward councillor Tracey Lourenco urges those who use the road as a thoroughfare to use alternative routes for the duration of the project, to alleviate congestion.
“During the day the road will operate as a stop-and-go and at night there will be dual-way travel,” she said.

“Due to the large number of businesses in the area with heavy trucks, it will be rather chaotic. Even though every effort will be made to ensure smooth traffic, peak hours will be congested,” she added.
The road will be open for residents and those who support businesses in the areas who rely on the support of residents in the immediate vicinity.
Roughly 600m of road will be reconstructed and portions will be widened. The road will be constructed in sections and one lane only will be reconstructed at a time. The expected completion date is June 30.
“We request that all thoroughfare traffic use the R25, Oranjerivier Drive or the P91.”
Kwartel Street
Roadworks to upgrade Kwartel Street in Birch Acres will also continue after a delay caused by logistical concerns on the part of Ekurhuleni Metro.
“The contractor has not been allowed to proceed until these problems have been sorted out. He will now go ahead,” according to Lourenco.
“Currently the traffic is a major concern and taxis are a law unto themselves, driving into oncoming traffic. I have informed the metro police and they will monitor the situation.”
Parkland Drive
Road works on Zuurfontein Road and Parkland Drive in Esther Park have also been causing several issues with traffic congestion, once again due to the total disregard for the law.
“Once again taxis are making lanes into oncoming traffic. The intersection of Parkland Drive and Zuurfontein Road will be complete at the end of February, but there will be several more months of construction along Zuurfontein Road.”
