Biggest cocaine bust ever at OR Tambo on Saturday

THE biggest ever cocaine bust by SARS officials were made at OR Tambo International Airport on Saturday.

Cocaine worth an estimated street value of R78m was confiscated.

This marked the biggest ever cocaine bust by customs officials in South Africa, SARS said in a statement.

The 271kg of narcotics, declared as cosmetics, were found in a cargo warehouse during routine operations while en route from Sao Paulo to Nairobi in Kenya,

Naidoo said a physical inspection was conducted after narcotic detector dogs reacted positively to the cargo. Officials found hair products packed in boxes.

“A drug test on a number of randomly selected containers all gave an immediate positive reaction to cocaine.”
