Two Ivory Park men arrested for alleged rapes

Ivory Park SAPS Communication Officer Captain Bernard Matimulane has reported that in the first incident a 20-year-old suspect was apprehended speedily, with the assistance of the community of Ivory Park Extension 2. He was allegedly caught while raping a seven-year-old.

Ivory Park SAPS arrested two men, aged 20 and 26, for two rape incidents which allegedly took place in Extensions 2 and 3, Ivory Park on the weekend of February 12.

Ivory Park SAPS Communication Officer Captain Bernard Matimulane said in the first incident a 20-year-old suspect was apprehended speedily with the assistance of the community of Ivory Park, Extension 2. He was allegedly caught while raping a seven-year-old.

“The suspect is someone known to the family, hence there was no problem when he took the victim and another minor to the nearby shop to buy them sweets. When the suspect and children came back from the spaza shop, he went straight to the shack of his friend, who was out at that time. It was thought the suspect had visited his friend, who is residing in the same yard as the family of the victim. When his friend came back, he found him allegedly raping the seven-year-old child and he called the mother of the child. The mother cried out for help and the community came out in numbers and the suspect was arrested. He appeared in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court to face a charge of rape. The second rape suspect, 26, was arrested on Monday for the alleged rape of a woman in her 20s at the weekend,” said Captain Matimulane.

While the station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, has welcomed these arrests because of the clear message they send to other potential culprits, he is extremely concerned about two other rape incidents in the Kaalfontein and Ebony Park area. In each of these incidents, two victims were raped at gunpoint by a balaclava-wearing suspect(s) in the early hours of Sunday. The first incident took place in Ebony Park; and the second one, an hour or so later in Kaalfontein.

“We appeal to our residents to be careful, especially while walking at night. While the modus operandi implies the actions of one person, we will follow any available lead to bring the perpetrator to justice,” said Brigadier Ngcobo.

Anyone with information relating to crime is requested to call the Ivory Park SAPS on 011 990 9600.
