Objections to new property valuation roll open in March

The new valuation roll can be viewed on the Ekurhuleni Website as well as at all customer care centres

THE new property valuation roll for Ekurhuleni for 2017-2021 will be open for objections from March 8 to May 5.

This roll is updated every four years as required by the Municipal Property Rates Act 6 of 2004. The new roll will be implemented on July 1.

“The purpose of this valuation is to determine a fair value of all properties for rates assessment purposes,” said Themba Gadebe, metro spokesman.

“In some instances, the rates may go up, while in others the rates may come down. It must also be remembered that many properties that have not been valued in the past will all now be valued and incorporated into the valuation roll.”

Gadebe said although the metro had a valuation division that handled all valuation matters, due to incapacity of staff, they were currently outsourcing these services.

The general valuation and supplementary valuation rolls are conducted by external valuators monitored by metro valuators.

The new valuation roll can be viewed on the Ekurhuleni Website as well as at all customer care centres.

Gadebe said residents would be notified through section 49 notices (letters) as stipulated by the Municipal Property Rates Act Amended 6 of 2004, as well notifications in City Press and Sunday Times on March 1 and 8.

The information will also be published in the Government Gazette on March 8.

The municipality uses the rates it receives for the upkeep of the Ekurhuleni metropolitan area, and also to provide residents with the necessary services and infrastructure.
