Metro promises to cut grass on dirty stand

The property belongs to the Republic of South Africa

AN empty stand on Eagle Road in Terenure remains an eyesore for residents living in the area.

The metro has yet again instructed a contractor to clean the stand after a complaint received from Willem Liebenberg.

According to Themba Gadebe, metro spokesman, a legal notice was issued on December 23 and a re-inspection was conducted on January 18.

“It was revealed that the stand has not been cleaned by the owner and therefore the administration process commenced in order for the contractor appointed by Ekurhuleni to cut the grass,” Gadebe said.

“The contractor started on February 20 to cut vacant stands in Kempton Park. He will be requested to urgently attend to this erf.”

Liebenberg has regularly complained about the property in the past. He eventually tasked a professional to do a deed search on the stand, which revealed the owner was the Republic of South Africa.

“I have thus obtained enough proof that the clearing of the erf and maintenance of cutting the grass and cleaning the sidewalk is an Ekurhuleni responsibility (owner/custodian),” Liebenberg said.

Gadebe said Ekurhuleni was not the registered owner of the property and that the land belonged to another state entity.
