The Tembisa SAPS arrested a 35-year-old man on February 23 for a car hijacking in Maokeng Extension.
It is believed the car hijacking took place at around 9am.
The Tembisa SAPS Communication Officer, Captain Manyadza Ralidzivha, said a 45-year-old victim reported that he and his friend were sitting in his motor vehicle, which was parked on the street in Maokeng Extension, when three men approached them.
“The three men forcefully opened the door of the vehicle. One of the three was armed and pointed a firearm at the occupants of the vehicle. The suspect saw an undisclosed amount of money in the car and took it. The victim fought with him and managed to get out of his vehicle and ran away. His friend also managed to run away.
“The three men entered his Toyota RunX motor vehicle and drove off,” said Capt Ralidzivha.
He said that, after three hours, one of the suspects was arrested after the police were tipped off about his whereabouts.
“The hijacked vehicle was recovered at Difateng section. The 35-year-old is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on a charge of car hijacking.
“We would like to warn the community not to park and sit in vehicles on the street. Most of our car hijackings are being committed by suspects on the street. The criminals target people who sit in their vehicles parked on the street. Sometimes they kidnap people and drop them off at another place,” said Capt Ralidzivha.
