Ivory Park detective arrests man for perjury

According to the Ivory Park SAPS Communication Officer Captain Bernard Matimulane, the man opened an attempted hijacking case at the Ivory Park SAPS in which he claimed that he was almost hijacked by men travelling in a Toyota Conquest.

A 53-year-old man from Kaalfontein Extension appeared in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court last Thursday for perjury, after he opened a case of attempted hijacking earlier this month in which he claimed that he was almost hijacked by three armed men.

According to the Ivory Park SAPS Communication Officer Captain Bernard Matimulane, the man opened an attempted hijacking case at the Ivory Park SAPS in which he claimed that he was almost hijacked by the men, who were travelling in a Toyota Conquest.

“He claimed that the men bumped into him, and that when he stopped, all three armed men approached him – at which point he tried to flee the scene. The suspect claimed he was blocked from doing so.

“Subsequent investigations by the Ivory Park detectives revealed that none of the claims the man made in his statement were true. It emerged that he had caused an accident in which he injured three pedestrians and had damaged the vehicle of the person he was now accusing of wanting to hijack him. And on top of that, it was the very same person he opened a case of hijacking against who called the ambulance, after he was assaulted by the community who witnessed the incident.

“There was an accident report that was opened, detailing what had happened,” reported Capt Matimulane.

Capt Matimulane said that, after being overwhelmed with the evidence, the man abandoned his stories and admitted to the other version, saying that there was never an attempted hijacking and that he was merely advised by someone close to him to open a case.

Ivory Park SAPS Station Head Brigadier David Ngcobo appealed to residents to refrain from opening false cases as this creates an additional, unnecessary workload for the police.
