A 52-year-old woman was robbed of her money last week by men posing as police officers.
Captain Manyadza Ralidzhivha said that on February 23 the woman was on her way to the clinic in Ivory Park when she was approached by an unknown man.
“The man touched her on her shoulder and then told her he too had been touched by somebody who had a ‘concoction’ in their hand. He encouraged her to see whether she had also been touched by this person.
“When she checked her jersey, she noticed something unusual on it. The unknown man immediately said they were lucky as the vehicle in front of them was a police car,” said Capt Ralidzhivha.
“They went to the vehicle and got in. There were three men already in the vehicle who acted like police officers.
“One of them told the victim that she had R15 in her purse and the victim said this was true – she did have that amount of money in her purse,” he continued.
“She was told that in order for her money to be safe she must withdraw money from her bank account.”
Bank
According to Capt Ralidzhivha, the bogus police officers then took the woman home to collect her identity document and one of them took her cellphone and checked her messages.
“They all went to Phumulani Mall,” he said.
“She went into the bank with one of the men and increased her daily limit. When she exited the bank, the man told her that she must give him her bank card.”
The suspect took the card and told the woman he wanted to spray it with muti so that the money would not disappear .
“He went to the ATM and keyed in her PIN number. From there she did not know what happened – she just saw blank papers coming out of the ATM.”
Captain Ralidzhivha said the suspect gave the woman R10 taxi fare, asked her for her cellphone number, told her that he would update her about her money and then left her at the mall.
A case of general theft has been opened by the Tembisa police.
