A section of Glen Marais that has been without power since 3pm on Thursday, will only have electricity by 8pm on Friday.
Speaking from the site where a 900m cable will be replaced, ward councillor Jaco Terblanche said the area around Apiesdoring Street had been without electricity several times the past weeks due to an ongoing cable problem.
He said contractors were already on site at the corner of Haak-en-steek en Quinine streets. The cable will initially be left above the ground and only put underground over the weekend.
Terblanche said the replacement of the cable was supposed to have started on Monday but the metro failed to do so.
In an urgent message sent to the city manager, Terblanche said the same area was without power for at least 30 hours the past week. The only information he got from electricity department officials was that they were “busy to isolate the problem”.
“Will you please intervene and request an estimated time by when the power will be restored. There are elderly people in the area that are on oxygen and we need to arrange an alternative place for them,” Terblanche wrote to the city manager.
He believes the ongoing problem is a result of a cable being damaged by a contractor on Quinine Street late last year, which had not been fully repaired.
