Shopkeeper hospitalised after robbers assault him with gun

A shopkeeper has been hospitalised after sustaining head injuries when he was assaulted with a gun during an armed robbery.

The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon when two suspects entered a shop on Casuarina Avenue, at about 2pm, and held up two staff members at gunpoint.

According to Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for the Kempton SAPS, the robbers immediately demanded cash after entering the business premises.

They also assaulted the shopkeepers, smacking one of them on the head with a gun and hitting the other on the leg with a bottle.

“Luckily, Kempton police were patrolling in the area and noticed the on-going robbery. The suspects then realised the police were on the scene and attempted to flee, but police cornered them and arrested them on the spot,” Mtshali confirmed.

When searched, a cellphone belonging to one of the victims was also found in their possession.

The victim who was hit with a firearm was then taken to the nearest hospital with head injuries.

Both suspects aged, 19 and 40, from Tembisa will appear in court facing armed robbery charges.
