Major cable replacement project kicks off in Glen Marais

R4 million has been set aside for this project

2.4km of ageing and frequently failing medium voltage underground cables in Glen Marais is being replaced by the metro.

The project kicked off on Friday after yet another power outage in the area.

“A number of streets in Glen Marais will be simultaneously dug up during this period to make way for the two-week long underground cable replacement work that is expected to stabilise electricity supply in the area,” said Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson.

The streets to be affected include, among others, Haak-en-Steek, Veld, Quinine, Apiesdoring, Wonderboom, Pendoring, Soetdoring, and De Bruin.

R4 million has been set aside for this project.

“The number of unplanned power interruptions is expected to reduce in direct relation to the completion and energisation of each cable feeder, added Gadebe.

The City will continue monitoring and analysing the network performance to ensure timeous interventions are implemented as and when required to reduce electricity downtime.

The City of Ekurhuleni apologises for the inconvenience caused and appeals for residents’ patience during this period.
