UPDATE: Shots fired at Springs Mall on opening day, 2 critical

Springs Advertiser is on the scene

UPDATE 12.45PM

Chris Botha of Netcare 911 reported that two people were critically injured in the shooting.

“Reports indicate that a cash in transit was in progress. Paramedics arrived at the scene and found that two people sustained critical injuries. Medics worked fervently to stabilise the injured at the scene. One of the critically injured men was airlifted to a specialised hospital in Gauteng for further care. The other patient was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital,” Botha said.

Shoppers have not been deterred by this morning’s events as residents continue to arrive and most shops are open.

Shortly after the ribbon cutting opening at the mall shots rang out.

It is believed, from witnesses in the area, that one shot was fired from the doorway near Nedbank.

This despite a heavy police and EMPD presence since early this morning.

Someone inside the mall – either the police or a civilian – returned fire and chaos ensued.

Two Springs Advertiser staffers are in the mall to get more details.
