A Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer has been shot and wounded on Monday, March 20, in Ivory Park Extension 2.
It is believed the JMPD’s officer was shot by the occupants of a white Toyota Hilux.
According to the Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Captain Bernard Matimulane, the police officer, who is in his 40s, and his colleague had just parked their vehicle as they were about to embark on a stop and search road block.
“It is believed the officer stopped the vehicle in question and the driver slowed down before shots were fired from the vehicle. The vehicle then sped away. Four R5 rifle cartridges used by the attackers were found at the scene. The officer was shot in the hand and foot and was rushed to hospital for treatment,” said Captain Matimulane.
Capt Matimulane said the attackers are suspected to have been part of a group that had just committed a business robbery that had taken place minutes before the shooting.
“During the business robbery, also in Extension 2 in Ivory Park, not far from the scene of the shooting, a shop belonging to an Ethiopian national was robbed. An undisclosed amount of cash and cellphones belonging to customers was taken. During the robbery, the shopkeeper was severely assaulted and was taken to the clinic for treatment,” said Capt Matimulane.
A case of attempted murder was opened at the Ivory Park SAPS and the police are searching for the suspects.
The Ivory Park SAPS is appealing to anyone with information to contact the station on 011 990-9600.
