R2.6-m cocaine found in laptop bags at airport

The woman was arrested and the drugs handed over to the SAPS.

Cocaine worth R2.6 million was intercepted during a search at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday, last week.

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) said customs officials and a detector dog unit intercepted 9.16 kg of cocaine during a search at the airport.

The cocaine was connected to a woman travelling from Sao Paulo, Brazil, to Maputo, Mozambique, who claimed to have no check-in baggage.

“Upon investigation by customs officials, it was discovered that the traveller was the owner of a bag that contained eight laptop bags with hidden compartments laden with a white powdery substance.

The substance tested positive for cocaine,” said SARS.

The woman was arrested and the drugs handed over to the SAPS.
