Angry mob beats up robbers on Kweper Street

The two have appeared in court, where they are being charged with robbery

ANGRY community members took matters into their own hands, attacking two men after they allegedly robbed a woman.

Mlungisi Shongwe (27) and Ndumiso Ngcobo (28) allegedly stole money and a cellphone from a woman on Kweper Street on March 14 at about 8.30am.

Kempton Park SAPS spokesperson, Capt Jethro Mtshali, confirmed that Shongwe and Ngcobo have appeared in court, where they are being charged with robbery.

Kempton Park detectives are investigating the case.

According to Alpha Security, they received a phone call from a concerned resident who works at a nearby firm, asking for help at the corner of Peter and Kweper Streets.

“She reported that two suspects had robbed a woman of her cellphone and money,” the security company’s general manager, Mornè le Grange, explained.

“Unfortunately for the two suspects there was an angry mob that saw the incident and decided to take the law into their own hands.”

They beat up the suspects really badly, according to Le Grange. “When I arrived at the scene at about 9am, the police were already on the scene. One suspect was sitting against the wall of the shopping centre. He had a large bump on the left side of his head as a result of the beating.”

Le Grange said the second suspect was lying on the ground, having sustained more injuries than the first. “He was bleeding profusely and had two visible head injuries and a bad cut on his right hand.”

Le Grange called for emergency services and a state ambulance transported them to Tembisa Hospital.
