THREE men were arrested in Birchleigh North on Tuesday after abandoning a hijacked vehicle and trying to flee on foot from the police.
The three, aged between 31 and 33, will face charges for possession of a hijacked motor vehicle and suspected stolen property in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court.
Capt Lesibana Molokomme, spokesman for Norkem Park SAPS, said two sector vehicle members spotted a suspicious looking silver Ford Figo with five occupants on Strydom Street in Birchleigh North around 3pm.
“The officers put on their siren and indicated to the driver to stop. The driver ignored this and sped off, ignoring several stop signs,” Molokomme said.
The chase continued to Zaria Street, where the five suspects abandoned the car and ran into the open veld. The two officers called for backup and gave chase on foot.
With police backup and help from the community, three of the fleeing men were captured in the Greenveld area.
Molokomme said: “Upon searching the car and suspects, the police recovered, among other things, cellphones, coins, cigarettes, a laptop and air time coupons.”
The car driven by the suspects was reported hijacked in Norkem Park earlier this month.
“The police have not ruled out the possibility that the arrested suspects could have been involved in other crimes in the area.”
