Honouring 21 March Street

Moriting community celebrates Human Rights Day on March 21.

The Moriting community organised a social gathering to celebrate their street name, 21 March Street, on Human Rights Day.

Mr Laurence Moabelo said that the event was held to commemorate the Sharpeville massacre which happened on March 21, 1960 after which their street was named.

“It is an annual event meant to teach our young generation about South African history.

“On this day South African police shot and killed 69 people in Sharpeville,” said Mr Moabelo.

Entertainers at the event were Mankwa and Thee Killers from Tsenelong Section, Freedom Square Drama and Albany Cultural Dance. Entertainment was also provided for the local children.

Mr Moabelo said the keynote speakers were Mr Simon Molekwa of L4U Foundation, Frederica Mpya from Yarona Art and Albany bakery representative Mr Reginald Sekhula.

“Mamosa Mohalane gave a word of thanks.

“Next year we hope to make this event even bigger and we appeal to sponsors to assist in making this gathering’s future events a success.”

Children shared the excitement of the day, bouncing on a hired jumping castle.
