Petition asks for refuse money to be paid back

'Residents will be advised once a reply has been received from the department concerned.'

DA ward councillor Pieter Henning has handed in a petition to council, asking that the poor refuse removal services be addressed.

The petition also asked that residents be credited with one month’s refuse removal fees.

“For far too long Ekurhuleni residents have been complaining about the inconsistent, late and, in some cases, no weekly services from the department of solid waste in the northern and eastern regions, with very poor explanations for the non-delivery,” Henning said in a statement.

“I presented a petition in council on March 30 on behalf of residents, requesting the city manager, Dr Imogen Mashazi, the executive mayor, Clr Mzwandile Masina, the MMC of waste management, Clr Ndosi Shongwe, and the head of waste management, Qaphile Gcwensa, to take immediate action to address the inconsistent and poor service from this department.

“Residents will be advised once a reply has been received from the department concerned,” he said.

“However, in the meantime, the mayor should personally investigate this matter and ensure that service delivery doesn’t grind to a halt. The entire environment and waste management oversight is in disarray, with the MMC unable to effectively manage this critical portfolio.”
