Section of Bergrivier Drive is open again

The roadworks, which began in 2015, are intended to upgrade and widen the road.

MOTORISTS can use Bergrivier Drive again after one lane was finally opened for traffic flow.

This follows months of the road being closed off due to the construction work being done on it.

The roadworks, which began in 2015, are intended to upgrade and widen the lengthy stretch of road which runs through Birch Acres, Terenure and Chloorkop.

The construction work eventually led to many businesses in the Chloorkop area being affected.

The companies affected were those situated at the end of Bergrivier, and for a long time the only way customers could access them was via Zuurfontein Road.

Residents were also inconvenienced because they couldn’t go through Bergrivier to get to Zuurfontein.

But one lane has been opened up now, which allows for motorists to use the road again – which those running businesses are extremely happy about.

“We formed a committee with the civil department, the contractor, the DA and the businesses that were affected or would be affected by the future phases of the roadworks project,” says Alpha Builders Supply director, Sylvia Goncalves.

The forum then discussed ways of moving forward and an agreement was reached between the businesses, the metro and ward councillor Tracey Lourenco on how the road could be made accessible to motorists and customers while the construction continues.

“I am happy to say that phase two of the project has begun, albeit late. The delay was due to the fact that we ensured that the requirements needed to minimise losses to the businesses, as well as to ensure that the general public who use Bergrivier Road daily, were put in place,” Goncalves explained.

“There is now a ‘stop and go’ arrangement which is regulated by the contractor, and motorists can access the road again. We as the businesses are very happy and grateful that the metro and the contractors could meet us halfway and open up the access to our premises,” she concluded.
