Stay alert over Easter, police warn

Visibility of law enforcement officers at shopping malls will also be increased

GAUTENG law enforcement is in full force with a crime operation for the Easter weekend.

Operation Paseka is a combined effort between Gauteng SAPS, Metro police departments and Gauteng Traffic members, to deal with criminality over the Easter holidays.

This includes increased visibility of law enforcement officers at shopping malls.

In a statement issued by the Gauteng SAPS, a few tips were given to mall-goers to be constantly vigilant and aware of the following:

• Do not fall victim to car jammers. Making sure that vehicles are properly locked at the parking bays before proceeding to shop.

• Make sure that all windows are closed after parking the vehicle.

• Do not accept help from strangers at the shopping malls.

• Be careful when withdrawing money at ATMs.

• Do not carry a large amount of cash around.

• Do not leave valuable properties on the vehicle seats.

• Always inform security if there are suspicious people and vehicles.

For those who will be travelling, the following should be avoided:

• Do not offer a lift to strangers.

• Do not stop at the signal of strangers as they might be criminals trying to lure potential victims.

• Look out for suspicious vehicles following you, especially towards your destination.

• Sometimes criminals pretend to be victims of motor accidents. Be careful before stopping. Rather call for emergency services.

• Be careful of smash-and-grabbers at stop signs and robots, especially in the early hours of the morning or at night.

If you will be staying at home over the long weekend, take care of the following:

• Do not allow strangers to enter your property.

• Gates should always be locked – or make sure that remote control gates are properly closed.

• Burglar bars and doors should be locked at all times.

• Make sure helpers and children are trained in what to do should something arouse their suspicion.

• Keep emergency numbers of police, sector vehicles and your local police stations on speed dial.

The police also appeal for co-operation and information from members of the community to deal with violent and serious crimes, including armed robberies.

To report a crime, call 08600-10111 or send an sms to 32211.
